So I won’t be posting Friday/tomorrow or this weekend because the plan is to transition the blog to my new URL http://www.MotherhoodUnadorned.com instead of forwarding from ellieadorn.com, and installing the new design and functionality by April Showers Blog Design.
So two posts for Thursday.
This one is totally a bonus. Yay! I love October. Not just because its my son, brother and nephew’s birth month. Its also my wedding anniversary month! 7 years on Oct. 9th. (I LOVE YOU John!) AND because Halloween is absolutely my FAVORITE holiday.
Fall is awesome, all of the colors, cool weather and beautiful and fun fall festivals. Pumpkin Spice Lattes, pumpkin pie, pumpkin scones, pumpkin anything. We typically spend weeks thinking about and coming up with our Halloween costumes. Last year I was a Bumble Bee. The year before (pregnant with Ellie) a Gypsy. The year before a fully decked out Hermione from Harry Potter. When I worked full time, I was the social coordinator at my office and planned the Halloween parties every year down to the dry ice. Even if no one was dressed up for Halloween in the office, I was.
One year I went to Mexico with my then client Hilton Hotels on Day of the Dead. It was incredible.
A reader recently emailed me and asked if I had ever thought to write a post about how difficult Halloween decor can be for people who have lost loved ones to suicide. Honestly, that is something I had never thought about so I’ve asked her to write her story. Stay tuned for that incredibly interesting perspective. But for now, I can say this.
I think of Halloween and surrounding cultural and religious holidays like Day of the Dead, All Saints Day, All Souls Day, Samhaim, etc. as celebrations of those lost to us. Celebrations of the harvest time when we are about to enter the darker days of the year. Celebrations of fun.
And since I am currently thinking about my own costume plans (I still don’t know what to be yet with my blue hair! Your ideas are VERY welcome! Comment. Comment. Comment. Please!) I thought I’d give you some great discount links for costume & Halloween party supplies.
